This study analyses the larval recruitment and biology in Crassostrea Gigas, in the Arcachon Bay. Three types of observations were conducted: - a study of the reproduction anomalies in C. gigas between 1976 and 1981. - observations of the particulate nutrition of the veligeres. - ecotoxicologic experiments (organostannic action on oyster reproduction, mostly). The reproduction anomalies in C. gigas could not be attributed to either the genitors' quality or the water quality in the Arcachon Bay, but to a perturbation of the veligeres' trophic regime; the hypothesis of an alteration of the nanoplancton in the Bay, during the summer period, and linked to the action of the organotins is highly considered. Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. The Bay of Arcachon has been particularly affected by the impact of organotin-based antifouling paints (His, 1996). Boring gastropods, Ocenebra erinacea, have completely disappeared from the Bay, because of the castration induced by these compounds, from 1980 to 1990. Two-year-old oysters have a physiology which is reproduction-oriented, their maturation occurring synchronously among oysters from the same batch. The importance of the spring accumulation of glycogenated stocks varies through the years and correlates with the growth stage. Glucidic components are quickly used during the month preceding egg-laying and are transformed into lipid stocks for the oocytes. Farming of the Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum took place for the first time in 1980 in the Arcachon basin. After an experimentation period of about ten years, a farming strategy, taking into consideration the distinctive features found in the bay, was able to emerge. For example, in order to fight against clam predators, crabs such as Carcinus maenas, and balistes such as Balistes capriscus, vertical protection coupled with prior ground gravelling, and laying of nets over the beds during the summer months, have become necessary. From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. Le présent travail décrit la méthodologie utilisée et les résultats obtenus au cours de la première estimation du stock d'huîtres Crassostrea gigas en élevage dans le bassin d'Arcachon en 1985. Afin d ' améliorer la précision des résultats et depuis 1986, quelques modifications ont été apportées à la stratégie d'échantillonnage qui avait été adoptée en 1985 : - prise en compte de la structure en âge de l a population, en différenciant les huîtres âgées de 1 an de celles d'âge supérieur, - traitement séparé des poches et des collecteurs pour l'élevage en sur élevé . A two-stage stratified random sampling survey has been designed. Samples have been collected using a Hamon bottom sampler in 237 locations distributed over 24 km2. The Stanway cylinder was tested in the bay of Arcachon from September 1989 to August 1991. Trials were mainly performed on the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas in a wind-exposed area. The seed, spat, 18 month old oysters development and fattening of 2 year old oysters were studied. Compared to plastic bags the Stanway cylinder has high positive effects on survival and growth of Crassostrea gigas seed. It also has positive effects on commercial sized Crassostrea gigas fattening. Nevertheless, the cylinder has negative effects on the growth of Crassostrea gigas spat and 18 month old oysters, except for width. "Il est impossible d'imaginer un lieu plus favorable à l'ostréiculture que le bassin d'Arcachon" (Yonge, 1950). En effet, l'huître indigène, Ostrea edulis, et l'espèce plus récemment introduite, Crassostrea gigas, peuvent s'y reproduire en abondant.
